Hugh Giordano, Green Party candidate for State Representative in the 194th district attended a rally on August 15, to ensure that Third Party candidates keep their place on the ballot in the November election. Giordano is officially on the ballot in November, but for some other Third Party candidates, they still have a fight ahead of them. The Republicans have challenged three Libertarian Party contenders who are running for Governor, U.S. Senate, and Lieutenant Governor. Democratic U.S. Senate nominee, Joe Sestak, challenged a Green Party candidate who is attempting to join the race against Republican Pat Toomey.

‘I think this is an attack on democracy to the fullest, and quite honestly I think the Democrats and Republicans are cowards,” Said Giordano. Giordano is outraged that the two party system has such strangle hold over the Pennsylvania voters and feels that every voice deserves to be heard and recognized in a democracy. “ I cannot understand why anyone would register with the two party system, let alone voter for the Democrats or Republicans,” said Giordano, “ Why would anybody vote for a party or candidate that not only forces you to vote for them, but also attacks your freedom to vote for the candidate you feel is best for the job.”

Giordano is a staunch defender of voters’ rights and believes all voters have the right to hear not only what he calls “ the two corporate parties”, but they also have the right to hear and vote for Green, Libertarian, and Independent candidates. “ We are supposed to live in a free country, yet the Democrats and Republicans treat this like a dictatorship, constantly attacking the basic rights of American voters – I will not stand by this when I am elected into Harrisburg,” said Giordano.

Giordano feels that every registered voter in the 194th district should really answer this question to themselves, “ Do I want to vote for a party that dictates who I can vote for, and what issues I am allowed to listen too?” Giordano made it clear that he will stand by every voter in the 194th district and the entire state, and when he is elected he will represent every citizen in the district, regardless of their party affiliation”. “If you are tired of the same old corporate Democrats and Republicans, and are tired of wasting your votes on them” said Giordano, “ then you have a real chance to vote for a candidate who will fight for public education, jobs, environment, and your freedom to choose what is good for you and your family. I suggest you vote for the only true independent in this race – Me, Hugh Giordano, the Green Party candidate.

Giordano engaging young voters
Friday, August 6, 2010

Hugh Giordano, Green Party candidate for the 194th District house seat on November 2, attended a fundraiser last Tuesday at the residence of two young local voters – Christopher Rodgers and Michael Torpey. The fundraiser had a back yard full of supporters who got together to support Giordano and his campaign in becoming the newest member of the general assembly in Harrisburg.

“It’s very encouraging to see so many young people getting excited about politics and my campaign. The voters have a real chance here to vote for someone who truly stands by them and the issues that affect them everyday.” Giordano feels its important for young voters to stay engaged and on top of the issues of jobs, environment, and public education because these are all issues that are going to affect them in their future; whether it’s a year from now or ten years from now. “Citizens need a state representative who understands them and is a true independent, and these issues must be tackled now,” said Giordano.

Chris Rodgers and Mike Torpey feel Giordano is the best choice in November, because he knows the issues and has lived in the district his entire life. “We both have known Hugh since high school, and when Hugh say’s he is going to do something, he does it!” said Rodgers. Rodgers and Torpey expressed how they know Giordano will stand by his word and will work diligently to get Harrisburg back in order, “If anyone can get the job done, its Hugh”!

Giordano knows that there are many young voters in the district who feel disenfranchised by the Democrats and Republicans. “The young voters must understand that in this election, they have someone who will work and fight for their future- and that person is me,” states Giordano. He also wants to get young citizens involved not only in his campaign, but to stay involved after he wins in November. “I plan on getting the citizens involved in community events and making them feel a part of the district again. No more CEO’s, corporate consultants, and corporate attorneys calling the shots.” Giordano made it clear, “ The days of big money and rich lobbyist saying what is right and wrong are gone. When I am elected into office, the people will finally have their voice heard.”

Green candidate backed
Roxborough Democrat and unsuccessful state representative candidate Bill Morris has thrown his support behind Green Party candidate Hugh Giordano for the 194th.

By: John Campisi, Star Staff Writer.

Back in May, the two sat on opposing sides of a candidate forum table, trying to make their respective platforms known.
Last week, however, the two banded together, using a backdrop of soaking rain to announce a newly formed partnership.
Hugh Giordano, the 25-year-old Green Party member making a name for himself in Northwest Philly, received an endorsement from Bill Morris, a local Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for his party’s nomination for the 194th Legislative District.
Pam DeLissio, a Roxborough businesswoman, won May’s Democratic primary, beating out Morris and three other Democratic contenders; school teacher Keith Newman, union organizer Lou Agre and former City Council aide Josh Cohen.
DeLissio will face Giordano and Republican Timothy S. Downey in November’s general election.
In the two months since the primary, Giordano steadily has kept up constituent outreach, attempting to keep his name in the race for state representative. The race is one of the most closely watched legislative contests, political observers agree, since the incumbent lawmaker, Democrat Kathy Manderino, is retiring after holding the seat for almost 18 years.
The 194th District includes parts of Northwest Philadelphia and neighboring Montgomery County.
Giordano, who despises corporate greed and “politics as usual” in Harrisburg, said he reached out to Morris shortly after the primary to ask for his support.
“At the time, I was trying to be second in command in our ward,” Morris said during the July 9 announcement at Roxborough’s Gorgas Park.
But seeing that his candidacy wasn’t meant to be, Morris said he decided to endorse Giordano, a man he respects for his independence.
“I honestly believe that Hugh is the best candidate . . . so I’m going to support Hugh in this race,” he said.
Morris said he actually met Delissio first, but eventually came to believe that Giordano’s politics were more along the lines of his own; Morris liked that Giordano was speaking for himself, and not for the party establishment.
“If the people listen to him and believe him, that’s more important than . . . politics,” Morris said.
Giordano relished the endorsement, saying it takes a lot of guts for someone like Morris, a Roxborough native son, active community member, and, perhaps most significantly, a longtime Democrat, to throw his support behind a relative newcomer, and one from a third party at that.
“I think that he’s a stand-up guy,’ Giordano said of Morris. “I think it takes a lot of courage what he’s doing.”
Giordano said the fact that Morris is supporting a political unknown in Democrat-heavy Philly is especially telling.
This is showing that the state, and the voters, are very upset with what’s happening,” Giordano said, adding that the problem with Harrisburg is it’s “controlled by big money and big powers, and people don’t have a say.
“I’m doing this for the right reasons,” Giordano continued. “I think the voters have a clear choice in November.”
Giordano referenced the catastrophic BP oil spill as an example of money taking precedence over all else, even public safety and health.
“We see what’s happening with corporate greed now,” he said. “They’re polluting our waters.”
And the fact that corporations continue to be virtually untouchable, thanks to friends in high political places, proves something needs to change, he said.
“To vote for Democrat (or) Republican at this point would be a wasted vote,” Giordano said, making reference to an often-used criticism of voting for an independent or third party candidate. “The tides have turned.”
It’s unclear how much of an effect Morris’ endorsement of Giordano will have on November’s race. Morris came in fourth out of five candidates in May’s Democratic primary, taking 16.6 percent of the vote. (In Montgomery County, he came in fifth, receiving just 32 votes.)
DeLissio did not comment on the endorsement as of Tuesday.
As for Giordano’s ability to win the race, it would have surely been a long shot in years past. (The Philadelphia Green Party only has around 2,000 members, according to party officials.)
But with the rise of the Tea Party movement, and other groups discontent with the status quo, candidates like Giordano say they believe they have a shot this election year because voters are ready for change.
Giordano is hosting what he calls a “Fun day” Sunday barbecue and fundraiser on July 18 at 7 p.m. at 603 Renz St. The event will include food, music, and an auction. A donation of $20 per person is asked; children are free.

The Review, June 16, 2010, page 2.
Serving Roxborough, Manayunk, Wissahickon , Andorra , East Falls

Candidate Hugh Giordano, “Seize BP Oil”

Hugh Giordano, Green Party candidate for PA House District 194, attended a rally against BP Oil Company at Philadelphia ’s City Hall on Wednesday, June 9. Seventy-five people demonstrated for two hours in the pouring rain. The protest was part of a national day of action organized by http://www.SeizePB. org.

The national protest sent a message that the $152.6 billion assets of BP should be seized and used to provide comprehensive compensation and relief for those who have lost their jobs and whose livelihood and communities have been severely harmed or destroyed, and to clean up and restore the environment.

“This is a very serious problem when corporations can do whatever they like in the name of profit and greed,” said Giordano, “especially when that greed ‘spills’ into our oceans and streams. They are still walking around as rich, greedy, free executives.” Giordano not only thinks that we should make BP pay for any and all economic and environmental costs that has happened from their oil spill in the Gulf Of Mexico, but we should also prosecute the CEO and all head executives for this crime on humanity and nature.

“Let’s be serious for a moment.” said Giordano. “If regular citizens were to dump barrels of oil into the Wissahickon Creek, they would be arrested and prosecuted. Yet BP executives and their corporate consultants have destroyed the entire Gulf Coast and NOTHING has happened to them!”

To date, BP has only paid 295 claims out of the 4,700 claims made for damages and losses incurred from the Gulf or Mexico accident.

“It’s important to remember that this will probably have an economic impact on our local economy,” said Hugh Giordano, www.hughgiordano. com. “If it comes out that seafood has become toxic, people will stop eating at our restaurants, and this could put thousands out of work!”
Giordano made it clear that he thinks the Democrats and Republicans are the ones to blame for their failure to regulate corporate greed, such as the BP oil spill. “BP makes $93 million/day in profits, and some of that goes directly into the campaigns of Democrats and Republicans. That’s why CEO’s and corporate consultants get away with destroying peoples lives and the environment around us.”

“ Pennsylvania ’s own BP spill is already happening,” said Giordano. He was referring to the drilling for gas in PA’s Marcellus Shale. Giordano said that, “oil and gas companies are drilling in PA as we speak and polluting our streams, rivers, land, and — most importantly — our drinking water!” Because of gas drilling in upstate PA, American Rivers recently declared the Delaware River to be “the number one most threatened river in the U.S. ”
Giordano feels that the same corporate greed that has consumed Washington has consumed Harrisburg in the same way, “The voters have to understand that if you keep sending corporate attorneys and CEO’s to Harrisburg , then you will continue to get representatives who only care about their CEO buddies. They care nothing for the citizens who voted them into office.”

“I will stand up against CEO’s, corporate consultants, and corporate attorneys, and I will fight for good jobs, clean technology, and a safe and clean environment.” said Hugh Giordano. ‘I will represent the people of the 194th district — not corporations that enslave working mom and dads and pollute our environment.
To sign the petition which says, “YES, I support the seizure of BP’s assets to provide comprehensive compensation and relief for all affected people and for cleaning up the environment,” please contact friendsofhugh@ gmail.com and 215-243-7103.

Candidate Giordano visits alma mater: Levering

The William Levering Elementary School in Roxborough held a Career Day on Tuesday, May 25. One of their invited guests was Hugh Giordano, who spoke with students in grades 7 and 8. Ms. Peggy Church, coordinator of the event, was so impressed with how Hugh connected with the students last year, that she invited him back again this year. “It is amazing,” said Giordano. “I graduated from this school over 12 years ago, and it still looks the same!”

Giordano, www.HughGiordano.com, is the Green Party candidate for Pennsylvania State Representative in District 194, which includes Roxborough. His topic of discussion with the Leverington students was his occupation. Giordano is a union organizer with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 152.

The students were interested to hear that Giordano, who sat in the very same desks, knew how it felt to be unsure what you want at their age. He made it clear that now is the time to start thinking about their future. “Even though you may not know what you want to be in 20 years, it is important to understand that — with education — the possibilities are endless.”

In the 8th grade, he won the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers Leadership Award, and now he is organizing workers and fighting for the working class. Giordano asked the children, “Who would have thought that winning a award voted on by the teachers in 8th grade would have so much relevance today?” He also told them about his working class family and how he had to pay for his undergraduate and master degrees because his family did not have enough money. “I know how it feels to have nothing and to work hard for everything you have, but if you want to make it; the decision is up to you.”

Giordano spoke to some of the teachers afterwards, “It is important that we reach these kids on a personal basis and let them know that we are here for them and will do whatever it takes to make sure they are a success.” He also spoke with the Levering School teachers about the education system and made it clear that as State Representative, he will stand by the teachers and not the corporate-controlled Democrats and Republicans in Harrisburg .

“The problem with Harrisburg ,” said Giordano, “is that it’s controlled by business executives and corporate attorneys, I will be for the people of this district and state. I think it is important for the voters to understand that we have given the corporate-controlled Democrats and Republicans enough chances. It is now time for them to vote for a candidate from the Green Party, www.gpop.org, who will act for working class families,” said Giordano.

Following the Levering Career Day, Hugh Giordano said, “It was very exciting to see my school again, but at the same time I left there a bit upset. I know the kids in this school and other Philadelphia schools are being forgotten and their teachers are not given the funds and control they need.”

Giordano thinks it’s a disgrace that Philadelphia School Superintendent Arlene Ackerman received a $65,000 “performance bonus” from the School Reform Commission on top of her $325,000 salary. “Can anyone please tell me where the ‘reform’ is in paying such a ridiculous amount of money, when Philadelphia school students don’t have enough after school programs and books on the shelf?” Giordano said that this must be the Democrat and Republicans’ definition of “reform”, “This is why I am running as a Green Party candidate, because I am tired of the corrupt system.”

Hugh Giordano will be on the General Election ballot on Tuesday, November 2. Voters can find more information about the Green Party and their candidate at www.HughGiordano.com and 215-243-7103.
